Michał Łukasik traces Warsaw’s modernist architecture. His photographs of buildings tell the story of prewar Warsaw and its aesthetics. „Warsaw Modernism” is not just a book – it is an invitation to travel through time, to a world of prewar elegance and bold visions that have stood the test of time and continue to intrigue with their form and functionality. It is a true treat for anyone who loves Warsaw, architecture, and the stories hidden within its walls.
At the heart of this story are Michał Łukasik’s photographs, which document Warsaw’s modernist architecture with extraordinary precision and artistic sensitivity. Each image is an intricately composed frame that allows us to discern details, forms, and the play of light, often inaccessible in the daily rush. Michał Łukasik, known for his passion for modernism and his ability to capture its essence, leads us on a journey through buildings that tell the story of prewar Warsaw, its aesthetics, and aspirations. His works are not only a visual feast but also a key to understanding the spirit of an era in which modernism became a symbol of progress and modernity. Łukasik’s photographs offer a window onto a world where functionality combined with beauty, creating a unique urban fabric.
From Łukasik’s collection of photographs, which already captured several hundred buildings, Jarosław Trybuś selected 60 modernist gems. In his texts and notes on buildings, Trybuś evokes often forgotten architects and draws attention to details that Łukasik skillfully captures. In her essay, Aleksandra Boćkowska contrasts today’s realities with those of the interwar period and speaks with the current users of modernist tenement houses and public buildings, who preserve the remaining architectural heritage.
